AVID 9
Avid is an academic elective designed to teach students effective academic survival skills such as : taking effective
notes, asking quality questions, building an effective peer-based learning community and improving reading, writing
and test taking skills. AVID is designed for the “average” students who want to learn how to learn better and
to get ready for a college, technical institute, or university. Students need to apply for this program and application
forms are available in the Counseling Centre.

AVID10 (YAVD10) (2 credits for AVID 11A & 2 credits for PLANNING 10)
AVID is an academic elective designed to teach students academic survival skills such as: taking effective notes,
asking quality questions, improving reading, writing and test taking skills. AVID is designed for the “average”
student who wants to learn strategies to achieve better marks in school with the goal of post secondary education
such as college, technical institute or university. The course is made up of 2 components: AVID 11A(2credits) and
the first half of Planning 10A(2 credits). The completion of the course for full credits occurs in the student’s Grade
11 year in which they will take the other 2 credits for AVID and Planning 10.

AVID 11 (2 credits for AVID 11 & 2 credits for PLANNING 10)
The AVID elective encompasses the key elements that promote academic success and ensure successful preparation
for post-secondary opportunities. It is an academic elective that is designed to teach students effective
academic survival skills such as: taking effective notes, asking quality questions, building an effective peer-based
learning community and improving reading, writing and test taking skills. Students need to apply for this program.

AVID 12
This final course in this academic elective program ensures preparation for post secondary study. The focus is on:
• supporting academic success by enhancing study and research skills;
• further developing writing, inquiry, collaborative and reading proficiencies;
• exploring post-secondary options, career trends and means to finance post-secondary education;
• refining personal skills such as communication and technological skills, managing stress and interviewing;
• preparing to complete graduation transition requirements.
* Entry into all levels of AVID is through an application and interview process.
